Youth Climate Corps

Ben is the Executive Director of Youth Climate Corps BC, and has been an outdoor leadership instructor for over a decade. He recently graduated from Royal Roads University Master of Arts in Environment and Management program, and for this Major Research Project created an educational toolbox for Youth Climate Corps. Ben's time as an instructor gave him a deep appreciation for the resiliency and adaptability of leadership in young people, while also seeing the human and natural consequences of the climate crisis. Ben has been involved with Youth Climate Corps BC for two years, and has grown the organization to serve communities across BC. |

Joan Littleford is both the past and the incoming president of the Rotary Club of Whitby. She is currently on the District Membership Committee and is the Secretary of the Basic Education and Literacy Rotary Action Group. In her professional life, Joan was a teacher of Special Needs students, children with learning disabilities and then Kindergarten where she found her real passion. She was a literacy and early years consultant in Scarborough and then the Toronto District School Board and was then seconded to the Ministry of Education to spearhead and document a consistent approach to reading instruction in the primary grades across Ontario. She was then appointed a member of the group who developed the first provincial approach to early learning from birth to age 6 which lead to the introduction of full day Kindergarten with a play based focus. Joan was then hired by ETFO -the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario where she worked collaboratively with the Ministry to develop an holistic approach to the education of young children in Kindergarten. |

Canadian History and Public Memory: Remembering Air India

Dr. Chandrima Chakraborty is a Professor in the Department of English and Cultural Studies; Director of the Centre for Peace Studies and the Global Peace and Social Justice Program at McMaster University. She held the honorary title of University Scholar at McMaster University (2017-21). She was elected to the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in 2019. Her research examines the relationship between nationalist history and public memory in South Asia and Canada. Her publications include, Masculinity, Asceticism, Hinduism: Past and Present Imaginings of India (2011), Mapping South Asian Masculinities: Men and Political Crises (2015), and Remembering Air India: The Art of Public Mourning (co-edited 2017). She has been conducting interviews with families and friends of those who died on Air India Flight 182 and gathering materials from family members and other critical witnesses to create the first-ever archival collection on the Air India tragedy at McMaster University Library. Ally is ShelterBox Canada's Rotary and Community Fundraising Coordinator. Originally from rural Nova Scotia, she is of mixed settler and Mi'kmaq (pronounced Mig Maw) Indigenous background. Ally attended Nova Scotia Community College where she studied Social Services and Community Development before moving to Kingston, Ontario. She graduated from the Global Development Studies program at Queen's University last June. She is a proud military wife, happy to be posted to Kingston, Ontario for the next few years. She lives with her husband Peter, their four cats, one dog, and one fish. In her free time, she volunteers regularly with Dress for Success Kingston as a board member and head of their fundraising committee.

Projects in Northern Laos

Steve spent his career as co-owner of a mid sized computer company in Toronto. He has served on several boards and committees in Port Hope including the Municipal Culture Committee, Parks, Rec and Culture Committee, Skatepark committee, Capitol Theatre Board of Directors and others. He has received two civic awards, the latest for philanthropy and is a multiple Paul Harris award recipient for his efforts (Port Hope, Whitby Sunrise, Ajax and Beirut Cosmopolitan) and awarded the Spirit of Rotary award in 2016. In 2018, he received the Family and Community Service award from the Rotary Club of Courtice. His most recent award was the Bob Scott Disease Prevention award from Rotary District 7070 in June 2020. With his partner they created a number of large events including one they held in their home netting $61,000 for the Capitol theatre and another town event for 6000 people. For the last 14 years Steve has served the rural villagers of Laos with the most basic of needs for sustained life. Since 2009, Adopt A Village in Laos has completed over 65 villages with filtered water one family at a time, serving over 35,000 rural villagers, constructed over 2 dozen permanent water supplies, repaired numerous others, built dozens of toilet banks, 12 school construction projects and continues to sponsor a host of secondary and university students, among other special interest projects. After the Beirut port explosion in 2020, Mr. Rutledge chaired the international sponsoring partner club committee (Whitby Sunrise club) and raised approximately $240,000 from 60 clubs towards a global grant to replace operating theatre equipment for Beirut’s only public hospital. Steve is also co-Chair of the International Committee at Whitby Sunrise and sits on the District 7070 Water and Sanitation Committee.

Hot chocolate booth

This Saturday your Rotary club is volunteering at a Hot Chocolate Booth to help Neighbourhood Link which is a local charity group that organizes a local food bank and activities for seniors, newcomers and the youth. The Hot Chocolate Booth raises needed funds to aid in this endeavour. There will be a Christmas Market, Parade and Tree Lighting at Mel Lastman Square from 2-9. Come and join in on the festivities. Many thanks to Derryn, CS, Heather, Vern, David, Ladan and Howard for volunteering to help this worthy charity. |
